    The National AEM Center invites you to participate in a free professional development opportunity to improve the accessibility of the materials your students use for learning. Many students with disabilities experience barriers to using curriculum materials due to physical, sensory, or learning disabilities. The outcome of the offered professional development is that you will improve your students’ access to the same curriculum materials as their classmates. And, we’re certain that you’ll discover that accessibility improves the quality of your curriculum for all learners. For this activity, we’re targeting educators in their first, second, or third year of teaching; however, we welcome all interested participants. Small groups from the same school or district are encouraged.

Join this session as we unpack the challenges faced by students as they exit high school and enter postsecondary settings, and the role of AEM and accessible technologies in providing equal access to education and employment. Strategies for scaffolding students’ independent use of AEM and accessible technologies as they progress from Kindergarten through high school completion will be shared.

OERs can allow school districts to repurpose funding typically spent on textbooks for other pressing needs, but they are not always accessible to all learners. In this session, you will learn about resources to help you select and/or create accessible OER content to support learning in inclusive settings.

Switching to openly licensed educational materials can allow school districts to repurpose funding typically spent on textbooks for other pressing needs. In this session, you will learn how OER and accessibility can go well together to support learning in inclusive settings.

    All students need useful learning materials in order to access, participate, and achieve in the general curriculum. However, the standard learning materials, both print and digital, that are purchased by school districts and used in the classroom are not always accessible or usable by all students. In response to these challenges, Ohio accepted an invitation as one of eight states to participate with the National Center on Accessible Educational Materials, in the AEM Best Practices Cohort project. This panel, featuring national, state, and district representatives, will discuss the issues at both the policy and practical level. The specific work of the districts participating in the Ohio Best Practices Cohort will be featured and the Ohio AT and AEM Center will also introduce supports and resources available to assist all districts in providing AEM and accessible technologies to students.

    Education agencies and institutions across K-12 and higher ed are legally obligated to provide accessible educational materials and accessible technologies (AEM) to learners who need them. In this interactive session, you’ll engage with seven Quality Indicators for including accessibility in the procurement of educational materials and technologies. You’ll also practice using a self-assessment tool that you can bring back to your colleagues for monitoring continuous improvement in the provision of accessible materials and technologies.
